Retort Technology: Unveiling the Secrets of Long-lasting Meals

On a multi-day hike, we took the 200g Slow Cooked Australian Steak to have on the first night. Reluctant to carry excess weight, I decided to share one with my husband. This dish lives up to it’s name – Gourmet meals for the Outdoors and is way too delicious to have with instant dried potato starch! We served ours with a generous home made dehydrated cauliflower stew. I usually plate up giving him 20% more than me, but this was hard to give up. The taste was amazing. I’m passionate about having fabulous and nutritious food on our hikes and I was really impressed with this product. It is mind boggling to see experienced hikers doing extreme adventures only to sit down to a packet of instant noodles and jar of peanut butter. If you check the labels, 2 minute noodles will provide about 2% protein with a lot of flavour additives and carbs. Not sustainable in any healthy eating menu. In my opinion, they are cheap but certainly nasty as well. There are plenty of convenient packets out there for those won’t don’t have a dehydrator or time or inclination to be in the kitchen. The On Track Meal we shared contained over 40g protein – 24g for him & 16g for me:) Do I think it was worth carrying the weight…? Always a compromise and a hard decision. The morale boost was definitely worth it, so yes, particularly on a longer hike. If I was really needing to minimise load for a difficult hike, then perhaps not as I usually cook and dehydrate all our meals including salads! Quality food does come at a cost. With 96% beef, the steak meal was very good value, compared to some other campers meals where the sachet contains mostly sauce or grains and around 20% beef for a similar cost. I will be stocking up to have a few on hand as they do have a shelf life of 3 years.
